RRK is a membership organisation that aims to promote, support and protect responsible reptile keeping.
"We broadcast free digital and printed media content that advocates effective husbandry and high welfare standards.
We also seek to oppose and refute those who aim to curtail responsible keeping through their use of misinformation and bias.
Responsible Reptile Keeping helps reptiles, keepers and businesses live better."
RRK is still relatively new, however, their aim and scope is already booming. Exotics Keepers, stores and rescues are already signing up and sharing their knowledge and data: the truth about keeping these animals! Their podcasts and articles compile scientific studies and experts years of experience to share among its members and the public.
As well as spreading credible information, their aim is to debunk false articles and data that has been created to slander keeping any reptile or exotic pet. The most problematic of these was a figure thrown around in an article in the Biologist. It claimed that 75% of pet reptiles die in their first year. Unfortunately, even though real, peer-reviewed studies have shown that the actual number is around 3.25% - 3.6%, the original data is shared far more often.
We are incredibly proud to be a part of the growing organisation, and we look forward to learning and taking part in their plans for the future of reptile keeping!
Even if you do not yet own an exotic pet, or if you're not sure you ever will but you love these wonderful animals, please become a member! It will help fund the research and spread of the correct information.
